Brazil (officially the Federative Republic of Brazil) is a federal presidential republic, located in South America, formed by the union of 26 states and the Federal District. The country has 5,565 municipalities, 191,480,630 inhabitants, as well as an area of 8,514,876.599 square kilometers, equivalent to 47% of South American territory. Compared with other countries of the world, has the fifth most populous and fifth largest. Ninth-largest economy in the world and largest Latin American economy, Brazil has today a strong international influence, both in scope regional or global. The only South American countries that have a common border with Brazil are Chile and Ecuador. The country is bathed by the Atlantic Ocean along its northern coast, northeast, southeast and south. Besides the mainland, Brazil also has some major groups of islands in the Atlantic Ocean as an example: Rocks of St. Peter and St. Paul, Fernando de Noronha (special territory of the state of Pernambuco) and Trindade and Martim Vaz in the Holy Spirit. There is also a complex of small islands and coral called Atol das Rocas (which belongs to the state of Rio Grande do Norte).

Despite being the fifth most populous country in the world, Brazil has one of the lowest population densities. Most of the population is concentrated along the coast, while the interior of the country is still marked by huge gaps demographic.

Portuguese colonization, Brazil is the only Portuguese-speaking country in the Americas.
